About Changes, a song by the talented American Music Group and musical artists Black Sabbath. First appearing on Vol. 4 in 1972, “Changes” is a piano ballad mainly inspired by drummer Bill Ward’s ongoing breakup with his first wife. As explained in Osbourne’s autobiography, while in the studio and experimenting with the piano, guitarist Tony Iommi composed the song’s sentimental melody. This was later accompanied by bassist Geezer Butler’s lyrics.
Ozzy Osbourne later re-recorded the ballad as a duet with his daughter, Kelly Osbourne, three decades later in 2003. For this version, which reached No. 1 in the UK singles chart, the lyrics were revised to reflect their relationship and moments of their life together. In this revised version, the lyrics portray the changing relationship of a father and daughter drifting apart.
